Then & Now
"Eye miniatures became popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These were hand painted miniatures of one eye set within a jewel, described as 'the lover's eye' : either a love token or a memory of a deceased loved one watching over those still living. On the reverse there would often be a lock of the loved one's hair under glass. In this period of sentimentality and romantic attitudes, the symbolism of pearls conveyed deep-rooted and intimate messages of love and grief."
